Washington, DC October 20, 2010–
Halloween is the perfect night for a ghost story, and on October 31
from 6PM to 7 PM, WAMU-88.5 will air Lean & Hungry Theater’s
radio drama production of Shakespeare’s classic tale of suspense,
murder and tragedy, “MacBeth” on its main broadcast
frequency (88.5 MHz). The show also will be streamed on the WAMU.org
web site.

This production of “The Scottish Play” was specifically
developed for WAMU-88.5 by Lean & Hungry Theater and is the latest
step in a continuing agreement between the NPR affiliate and the
DC-based radio acting company.
This past September, WAMU-88.5 aired the company’s two-hour radio
drama version of Shakespeare’s comedy “Twelfth Night”
on the radio station’s HD-3 channel.
Based on the continued availability of high-quality programming from
Lean & Hungry, National Public Radio affiliate WAMU-88.5 also is
prepared to offer clearance for a monthly series of radio dramas from
the company.
“This is a fast-paced retelling of ‘MacBeth,’
combining the original Shakespearean text with techniques from popular
radio shows of the past,” said Lean & Hungry Artistic
Director Jessica Hansen. “We’ve used a ‘War of the
Worlds’ approach to the narrative – introducing newscasters
to compress some of the plot points in modern language.
“This new way of telling the ‘MacBeth‘ story keeps
the show to one action-packed hour, while also making it understandable
to a wider audience. It’s a unique audio version of the play that
will really draw in listeners,” Hansen explained.
“It’s a great way to usher in Halloween evening while
doling out candy to the trick-or-treaters coming to your door,”
she added.
Lean & Hungry’s “MacBeth” was directed by Karen
Munson, WAMU-88.5 Manager of Content Operations, and by Kevin
Finkelstein, who played Feste the Jester in the company’s
production of “Twelfth Night.” The cast includes many of
DC’s fastest-rising acting talents, including Steve Beall, Luke
Cieslewicz, Billy Finn, Julie Garner, Jessica Hansen, Rebecca Herron,
Andreu Honeycutt, Jason McIntosh, Karen Novack and Alex Zavistovich.
Post Production Engineer for Lean & Hungry’s
“MacBeth” was Steve Murphy, an award-winning Washington, DC
audio producer with both Grammy and Emmy award recognitions. Original
underscore was composed by Lean and Hungry Technical Producer Gregg
Martin.
Lean & Hungry’s “Twelfth Night” is available as a
two CD set at the Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC. It
also is available for download from iTunes, CDBaby, Digstation, and a
number of other sites.
Lean & Hungry Theater’s goal is to provide radio drama
adaptations of Shakespearean classics using contemporary
interpretations, distributed with modern technology, to make the
classic texts more readily available and easier to understand for
underserved communities. The company’s works are endorsed by the
Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind.
Lean & Hungry Theater now is seeking underwriting support for its
mission, as well as to increase capacity for further educational
initiatives. Donations to the theater company are fully tax deductible.
