WHY
DONATE:
Lean & Hungry needs private funding, grants and endowments to
pay
actors, directors, and other staff, in addition to purchasing
much-needed equipment used in both live production and recording.
These donations will help Lean & Hungry continue its mission of
creating performances that support the educational needs of
under-served communities.
Lean & Hungry is especially committed to supporting the
Hispanic
and African American communities, which comprise a large proportion of
the demographic of Columbia Heights, where the theater is
headquartered.
The 2000 census figures (the most recent figures available) estimated
the population of Columbia Heights as follows:
African American: 58 percent population;
Hispanic: 34 percent;
White: 5.4 percent; and
Other: 3.1 percent.
English is a second language to a significant proportion of the local
community. For this reason, Lean & Hungry’s outreach
and
involvement in the community provides an important educational benefit
to audiences of all ages, enabling the audience to gain a greater
appreciation of and fluency with the English language.
That fluency creates greater opportunities for advancement.
The productions of Lean & Hungry Theater are endorsed by the
Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind.
